Community Access Program:

The Community Access Program (CAP) is a Government of Canada initiative, administered by Industry Canada, which aims to provide Canadians with affordable public access to the Internet and the skills they need to use it effectively. With the combined efforts of the federal, provincial and territorial governments, community groups, social agencies, libraries, schools, volunteer groups and the business community, CAP helps Canadians, wherever they live, take advantage of emerging opportunities in the new global knowledge-based economy. Under CAP, public locations like schools, libraries and community centers act as "on-ramps" to the Information Highway, and provide computer support and training.

The program plays a crucial role in bridging the digital divide; contributing to the foundation for electronic access to government services; encouraging on-line learning and literacy; fostering the development of community based infrastructure; and, promoting Canadian e-commerce.
CAP is also complemented by its youth initiative, the Community Access Program Youth Initiative (CAP YI). The youth program provides employment opportunities to young Canadians between the ages of 15 to 30 in various CAP sites across the country.

Park Development:

October 2005: New Look For City Entrance

Wow! What a difference a couple of weeks can make, when a plan comes together. For the most part, the landscaping work on the park development at the Chamber of Commerce is complete. Finishing work is yet to be completed, and will include at least signage and lighting, and may include park benches and other added touches.

Artist Don Hefner was on hand as the work crew moved the life-sized barbed wire bison from it’s temporary display home at the Frontier Mall to the entrance of the Battlefords off Highways 16 and 40 East. This location has been the chosen destination since the sculpture was commissioned.

THANK YOU to all of the people who have so generously donated time, personnel, equipment and expertise to bring this project to life. Chamber of Commerce Directors Dr. James Lawrence and Rhonda Seidel, along with Chamber staff, have worked very hard behind the scenes to plan, prepare, and engage community and business people in the development of the final product. Even as the dirt was being moved, new ideas or plans were put in place. The City of North Battleford, along with business people, Darryl Turuk of Tree World; L & M Wood Products of Glaslyn; Howard Kirby of Anderson Pump House Ltd.; Artist Don Hefner; and Chris Odishaw of Battleford Furniture Ltd., all deserve to be commended on their efforts to allow the Chamber of Commerce to realize this dream to beautify the entrance of the community.

Please take a moment to come by, and see the bison. Let us know your thoughts or comments. Business can contribute to the ongoing development of the Henry Bergen Memorial Park by making a donation to the Battlefords Chamber of Commerce. Contact our office at (306) 445-6226, email at b.chamber@sasktel.net, or mail at P.O. Box 1000, North Battleford, SK, S9A 3E6.

Thank you again to all those who have contributed to date.
